Description

Amy Johnson.
1903 - 1941

Walter Raleigh once said "The engine is the heart of an airplane, but the pilot is its soul." and no one had more soul or courage in the air then Amy Johnson. A visionary and free spirit, she shattered record after record in the aviation world. A world that was previously almost exclusively the domain of men. Often at the risk of her own life, she made flight after flight to all corners of the globe in record time. Ever the free spirit, she accepted her husband’s proposal just 8 hours after they met. She continued in her passion and true love until the day she died, tragically shot down by friendly fire during the Second World War. However, she soared into the hearts of the public and showed us that any hope, no matter how high, is always within your grasp.

Amy Johnson is a local hero, and it's nice to see her get some recognition! Last year my town played host to the UK City of Culture and we had a replica of Jason hanging in the Interchange. This photograph is a lovely tribute to her.
